What Becomes a Legend Most?

I know, I know ... Our society is going down the toilet and Miss Miley is just the next teenage queen of scank. Or is she? Above is an image of Elizabeth Taylor in 1948. The s-e-x-k-i-t-t-e-n had just turned 16. Below is our Miss Cyrus. Obviously she is headed down that same sad road as poor Elizabeth Taylor. OK - 15 is not 16.

Here she is at 15 just after National Velvet with the same amount of fabric covering her bodice.

My point (don't hate me!) -- IT'S ANNIE *%$@# LEIBOVITZ, people. What becomes a legend most? My sisters are going to kill me but I don't think the portrait is that scandalous. I think Annie Leibovitz always wins and takes beautiful pictures. Sorry. Miley might be worth a billion dollars but Annie is an artist.

And do you really think Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus sent the photos back to Vanity Fair? I think not. Conveniently, they got to go to the photo shoot and be outraged at a later date when someone whispered in their ear that they should cry SHAME ON YOU, ANNIE. I wish all of life's moral decisions were a revolving door having it both ways.

Maybe all of this "End of the Miley World" will bode well for us in Utah County. Maybe now we will be able to get a ticket to the Stadium of Fire on July 4th.

By the way, this 1949 portrait of Ms. Taylor at age 17 is titled "S-E-X Education". Now, those were the days.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

Can you do a picture of me in the Miley Cyrus pose? YES!

If she were in a swim suit, even posed as Miss Elizabeth was posed, I think it would have been less of a big deal. To me, the sheet, the messed-up hair, etc, like she has just come naked from the bedroom after doing who knows what (well, you know, and every teenager knows) as a 15 year old is what I don't like. It seems like something you would see in a tacky A&F catalog. I like Annie's work but not all of it. Is she now in charge of A&F? It is a good thing this has taken up so much media attention so we do not need to think about real news.

Andi, you never got back to me this week. Did you get my email?

Great post Andi. You can't possibly know that I have ALL the BLACKGAMA "What becomes a Legend Most" ad's from the 60's, 70, &
80's. I used to call the photographer's assistant- her name was Blue DeCassares and she would send me tear sheets of the ad's for that season. I also have a couple of books with the ad's in them but Margo Fontayne and Rudolf
Nureyeu wouldn't give permission for their photo to be reprinted but I have the tear sheet of them.
I know, I know--my husband tells people that "my wife knows more about nothing than anybody I know".
Can't believe this is source of joy when I've never read a Charles Dickens clear through.

Sorry, I know I just left a comment but I forgot to say that I have loved Annie for years. I know she is outrageous sometimes but I still bought her $80.00 book that came out last year.

Honestly--this is the first Miley picture that doesn't make me want to gag.

Sure--the picture can be seen as risque, and Annie can be called a photo despot--but let's see it for one moment in another light--A 15/16 year old girl who is realizing that she's beautiful and testing those waters.

Now, I'm not schooled in the art of bedroom eyes--so this is just my humble opinion--but when I look at that picture it harkens to mind this idea that the poor girl went to bed one warm summers night, with wet hair--and woke up in a grey room, on a grey day to this shot. --one of those days where you know you're going to be pretty.

The end.

The issue isn't with Liebowitz's artistry...it is a pretty picture. The issue is that Miley went to a photo shoot, took off her top and posed. Would you let Zina do that, even if the result were artistic? Miley has made her career by selling a wholesome image, and this departure from that is stark. Hence the outrage.

Cindy - I LOVE the concept! Let's get Whitney to do it for your blog.

Anne - What are you doing on Monday? And that Cyrus crew knew what Annie L. was when they picked her up off of the street.

Judy, Judy, Judy - You have been holding out on me. I want to see all of the Blackgamas! And I really want that book.

KJ - I think you should get your picture done also when Cindy does hers!

Hello Degns - Do I have to answer that question? I hate to say it but Miley lost that battle by even showing up to a photo shoot with Leibovitz. It is the clash of the Titians.

If it were my daughter, I would have put a stop to the photo about at the point where the photographer said, "now, for the next shot, let's get one of just you and a sheet." That would have been the appropriate time for parental concern. Or at the very least when they were signing the consent forms for the photo to be released. Making a big fuss after it has been released mean they were either not paying attention when they should have been, or they were jealous of Jamie Speare's "good girl gone bad" publicity.

BTW, are you going to make to the blessing? If so, will you be bringing your camera? You could even take some pictures of him nude on a blanket. :)

I think it's a good picture. I think like someone else said that she looks halfway normal and vulnerable in this picture. She is seriously unphotogenic on the red carpet...fishtown lips.
Did you see the whole shoot? the one with Billy Ray was by far more disturbing to me. Her all up next to him looking at him in this weird way...ekchkkdkd. I think she's a good kid. I really don't think she'll be Brittney.

Erin - Like I said, she never stood a chance against Vanity Fair.
