This morning
Xanny asked for shark hair. It was his first day of school and the kid has already picked a side. I always hoped he would want to be a Shark and not a Jet. The Sharks were better dancers and the Jets just smoked too much. I was determined to send my
homie off
"con gusto".

Here's the
breakie: 3 eggs, 2 pieces of toast, 4 plums, 1 tall glass of whole milk and a juicy peach off our tree -- picked this morning. I call it the Micheal Phelps special. You never know if a kid needs that extra power when he is out there all alone in the cold harsh world.

On the first day of school it is essential as a mother to mark your man, so to say. I admit, the shirt was my choice. But it's important for a kid (and the rest of the world, for that matter) to know just who's gang he
really belongs too.
Xanny wasn't content with the traditional family tradition of holding up your years in fingers. This is his attempt at his more accurate age in fractions of 5 & 5/6
ths. At least he didn't try to illustrate what all his
chromosomes look like using his
phalanges.

Here's the total package. The bike, the backpack, the shark hair all ready to go. And the bus ... look at that thing. The steel beast swooping down to drag my small child away. It's huge. FOR THE LOVE OF QUILTS, PEOPLE, HE'S JUST A BOY!

(Xan to 5th grader: "Did you know that I am really nearly six years old!")

Yes, I actually got on the bus to make sure he found a good seat ... and to tell him to stay away from nose-picking-boy. (A mother's work is never done.)

OK, I confess. I was the only mom there today with not one but 2 Canon 40
Ds and a 70-200 on a
ballhead tripod. I also confess that it took me most of
Xanny's time away at kindergarten to edit, compose and publish this silly post about my ...
uhh, I mean
his ... first day of school. (Maybe there is a 12 step program someone can recommend.)

I am happy to report that I was very brave and didn't cry. After all, I still have home-girl, Rita, to keep me company.

Way to go ---- I think you figured out the way to keep the tears from coming - 1. be costume director par excelance 2. be gourmet cook, 3. be the recorder...photographer and 4. so into every minute that there is absolutely no way to fall apart. I think one of my sister in laws was so emotional after her first baby went to kindergarten (who by the way went as confidently as Xan) that my brother took off the morning from work to take her to breakfast. When #4 went, she tried to force a few tears out and then did the finger dance back to the house!
I'll check with you later this week to see how days 2 & 3 go!
Oh, boy, I think you went a bit overboard. That was hilarious.
You brave mama. Good idea to keep yourself really, really busy.
Love the nosepicker shot.
too much! hilarious! i will have to time my morning exits of the neighborhood so as to catch you sending Xan off on the bus!
You handled it just perfect. Xan is adorable. Choose a different word when you tell him. Congratulations on the non-tears-- just wait till the next time.
Good luck.
Judy
Thanks, Ladies! Only through the miracle of blogging was the day bearable.
BTW - Xanny said the worst part of the school day was when his teacher told him he had to go home at the end of his class. He told her that he just wanted to stay until midnight.
OH my gosh. I think I'm going to cry. I can't believe Xan is old enough to start school. He was only born last week or something.
When Ike started preschool at 3, it was the moment the bus pulled up
that I nearly lost it. Talk about scary! I Never knew just how brave it was of me to let him get on alone until now!
HOLY CRAP!!!!!
School already?!
Love the shirt....
will call you soon!
Andi, I love the verbage you use to explain things. Hey that breakfast looks awesome! I must be a lousey mom I haven't even taken pictures this year of my son of on a new year of educational adventure. Are you sure he doesn't have a Harley to ride to school to go with that momma boy shirt?
damn!
a.) your kids just get prettier and prettier.
b.) Xan's a real boy now!
You have great kids. You are a great mom. Can you come to Houston and teach me your skills. I have a lot to learn.
That is one seriously brave yet cute kid. Love the shirt! And you're one even braver mom [sniff]
Hope to see you soon!

oh, how sad. at least for me. the bad thing is that i am that sad every year no matter what grade they are in. or is it getting worse the older they get. stop all that growing. give me one more year with a little boy before he is big, please?!
Wow, Xan looks so big. Aaron started kindergarten this year, too. Not nearly as tough-looking as Xanny though, that's for sure!
Stumblin' thru via Cindy....
"shark hair" is "Italy hair" (apparently an Italian soccer player) to our kinderkid.
i love that "mom" shirt!
