Mercy, Mosquitoes and Religious Peddlars

Meet Michelle (above) and Kimberly (below). These are my two closest LDS neighbors in DC and have made life in the city easier for me. Kimberly and Lindsey were the very first people I met here. I took it as a sign that this was the place when I found out there were ward member right across the street. She has a garden several blocks away were she invited the Davis and Cook families over for FHE. We marched down to unleash a new batch of ladybugs on the aphids -- a sort of organic bio warfare against pests. We all hopped around the garden trying to avoid the killer swamp mosquitoes which were hell bent on eating our children. The ladybugs, well, they didn't quite happen as planned -- but we didn't much care. (At least the packing peanuts were edible.) It was just nice to pretend we were in the wild and eat sweet tomatoes.

Michelle lives next to Lincoln park with her boyz -- Mark, Daniel, Isaac and Male Embryo (who is due to make an appearance this fall.) You know when you say you have a friend who is a life-saver? Well, Michelle REALLY is a life-saver!! Here is a small list of problems Michelle has helped me solve -- pink eye, sinus infections, 107 degree fever, ear infections, bleeding head wounds and the latest, African Tick Bite Fever. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Michelle. We are deeply in your dept and just might show up on your door step China with a batch of cookies. (The Cooks are having this baby and then quickly moving to southern China with the State Department this winter.)

Daniel (above) and Isaac (below) are just about the only other boys in an ocean of little girls in our ward. I am sorry, boys, that Xanny is jumping ship.

It's Mark & Mark talking shop about China.

I would be remiss if I didn't bear my testimony about this door on 11th St. I walk past this sign all the time and always feel just a little bit jilted. Hey, I was a religious peddler in this city many years ago! Often I wonder if I would've knocked on this door. I know that Katie would. She nearly stomped up those stairs and called them to repentance, left them with a Book of Mormon and dumped a pile of firewood at their feet. She is definitely power! Luckily for me she realized she didn't have a tag or a companion, and in the end -- it was too hot for even the spirit. What would you do?

Is there a problem in D.C. with door-bell ditchers leaving firewood in their wake? I think I would have to knock just to find out the story behind the sign.

Hmmm, I think you should peddle something else, like home security systems or pesticide or boondoggles, and then while talking about your wares offer them some firewood or a BofM. But you know, I sometimes think about putting up a sign like that in my yard, those pesky mormons and lumberjacks just tick me off.

Hello Andi and Mark and all!
So great to hear about your Katie getting home and wedding party coming up. Watch for my Katie in the Visitor's Center this week. She arrived August 7th in Washington DC to her mission assignment in the Visitor's Center and nearby proselyting. She's been learning Mandarin in the MTC the last two months but she will teach in English too. I hope she gets to say hello and hear your concert. She will want to hear about Africa from Katie as that is one of her loves. She worked in Zambia and Zimbabwe for a few months...before teaching in China...before this mission. Can't wait to hear you/see you in Noniland. Love, Rosie roselleandersonhamblin@gmail.com

As a missionary I still would have knocked. You never know, you never know. Nowadays I would walk past and think, "Eh, that's a nicely created sign."

Shauna - There is a problem with snotty fancy home owners, but it is a great sign.

Brooklyn - Michelle told me she knew you (and Jordan). She is one of my life long favorites.

Kim - I think a pesky Mormon lumberjack is just what you need to knock on your door.

Rosie - We are playing a gig there tomorrow. We will definitely say hello!

Cindy - I knew you would knock! I often wonder if the sign is original to the house.

I know the Cooks too! They are great! Please say hello from me. How great that they are your neighbors, if even for just a short while.

Alisa - How do you know the Cooks? Did your paths cross when you two were Allred and Evenson in Guatamala?

Andi - I was surprised to see Alisa's (Hna Allred's)blog. She was my MTC teacher - for welfare training. We then met again at BYU at the international studies program(ISP)office -Marc's second home. What a small world!

Michelle - I am sure we know all the same ISP people. We will have to get together and swap stories. Alisa, who else of our crowd would Michelle recognize?

if i had that sign i would post it on my door simply for its curiousness and then hope people would knock anyway. i want a door that people blog about! there's a door down 5th east in provo with scriptures written in magic marker all over it. you gotta see it to believe it. remember when we visited that abandoned house and the carriage house where some guy was squatting?! i'm glad you and co. will be coming back.

Raquel - I remember breaking and entering with you like it was yesterday. I want to see that door! BTW -- I loved the movie star post.

Cindy would have knocked on the door and I would have moaned in the back ground, as Cindy would say God loved them. I wasn't to good as a missionary, but I can recognize a good door, and that is one.

In my next life I am going to be a fly on the missionary backpack of Ferguson & Bushman!
