MoTH - Moms on The Hill

Last week was the official Moms on the Hill picnic. MoTH as it is called for short is this amazing list serve for set up years ago to serve the needs of women raising kids on The Hill. There are between two and three thousand members -- all parents who currently live on The Hill now or have at some time in the past. I have found the list incredibly useful and, frankly, I do not understand why there is nothing comparable in Utah.

Basically it is RS for DC. If you have a baby someone will bring you meals for a week. If your mother-in-law is coming for a week with her pug, someone will find you a bed for her and Fido. If you have a question about ANYTHING someone on the MoTH list has the answer. Where to get best education for your 3 year old for just $7,000 a year, which island of the Caribbean is most kid friendly, who will get that squirrel out of the roof of your historic home without injuring the squirrel or the crown moulding- all these questions and many more can be answered with in 2 to 4 hours by someone on the MoTH list.

So why is this subject so entertaining (and so wordy a post for me?) I will just let the post speak for themselves. Tonight I give you MoTH:

1. On potty training . . .

We are taking our first steps in potty-training our 2.5 year old son. He never asks to do it in the toilet, or goes somewhere private to do it, etc. Other parents report that what really works is that famous "week to just let him run around naked"

Well - what if I don't have that week? He goes to pre-school 5 full days a week (and we work full-time), and it doesn't seem like 2-days-on-5-days-off will do the trick (and frankly, the thought of dedicating our normally busy weekends exclusively to potty training is not a happy one). So the question is - what other methods can be effective, given our circumstances, to get him well on his way to potty training? Ideally, we'd like to do this sooner than later. A sibling is coming in 6 weeks, and public school starts in 2 months. Thanks.

2. On nannies (always a popular topic). . .

ISO: Dads of a Guatemalan (?) 2 year old boy with a Nanny

My nanny shared with me some concerns regarding Spanish speaking nanny with a ~2 year old boy in Stanton Park today. This is the second time she has shared these concerns and I thought the parents should be made aware. She didn't know the boy's or the nanny's names, but is pretty sure he is adopted from Guatemala and has two dads. Please contact me off line for details. Thanks!!

3. On new mothers . . .

MoTHs Becky Lev and Cathy Davall welcomed daughter, Emerson, on 6/21 and would love MOW's [MOW's are Meals-on-Wheels] to help them through the sleeplessness!

Here's their information: Names: Becky & Cathy, 2 adults, no greenpeppers or mayo- we eat pretty much everything else and love Thai food. Please deliver in disposable dishes. Please deliver at 6:30p.m. unless you discuss a more convenient time with us. If you have any questions about MOW's, please don't hesitate to contact either of us.

Thanks for cooking!

There it is. BTW- I am taking something organic over to Becky and Cathy tomorrow. I love this city.

So, i'm sitting here reveling in your DC talk--and amazing pictures--and My roommie Lauren ( you met her-blonde, gorgeous, canadian--great smile!) walks by and says you should come and do her wedding shots. Ha! She's getting married @ the DC temple on Nov. 15th. What are you doing?
( She's not kidding! She'll buy you a ticket and is promising her firstborn!)

Might be fun, eh?!! :)

PS- Hope Becky and Cathy loved their dinner!
PPS- I'm missing DC!
