From the Street

It took exactly one hour to drive the roughly 7 miles to the Cathedral so to pass the time I snap some street shots. This is Mr. Canalas of Canalas Meats that was burnt inside Eastern Market. He also runs the Tortilla Cafe that has great papusas.

This is our neighborhood mounted policeman and his huge saddle mule. I'd say it's a good 17 hands. Does anyone know what a "hand" is? Well I will just tell you. A "Hand" is a unit of measure equal to 4 inches, used to measure the height of a horse at the highest point of the withers. The number of whole hands is properly followed by a period, then the remaining height in inches. Thus a horse who measures 5 feet and two inches at the withers would be designated "15.2 hands".

Best grandma of the day! I want those shoes. If you know me well, you know I am not at all kidding. They must work - she looks great for 60.

The same night as Eastern Market fire there was a 3 alarm fire at the Georgetown Public Library. Does anyone know why they call it a 3 or 4 alarm fire? Well I will tell you . . . Each alarm represents the number of firemen, trucks and paramedics required to fight any given fire. One alarm is for 44 firemen, 4 trucks and 1 paramedic. Each consecutive alarm is a multiple of 44, 4 and 1. Eastern Market was a FOUR alarm fire but not because of the size of the fire or the building but rather because the unstable roof made it too dangerous to fight from the inside.
